Why Music and Performing Arts?
Music not only has the power to build academic and social skills, unleash creativity, and develop self-confidence and self-esteem, but music has the power to unite people of multiculturally diverse backgrounds as one. The Arts develop neural systems that produce a broad spectrum of benefits ranging from fine motor skills to creativity and improved emotional balance. In a study conducted by Judith Burton, Columbia University, research proved that subjects such as mathematics, science, and language require complex cognitive and creative capacities “typical of Fine Arts learning” (Burton, Horowitz, & Abeles, 1999). UMAPAF will create accessible, sustainable, high quality music and performing arts programs, as well as life lessons aimed at successful high school graduation, opportunities for developing job skills, and college preparation and support that will last a lifetime.
Our Goal
Urban Music & Performing Arts Foundation Inc. (UMPAF), formerly New Journey Total Wellness Inc., was renamed in 2019 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing quality music and performing arts education and experiences as well as quality instruments to students at schools and sites in North Carolina.
UMPAF Inc's goal is to raise awareness of the importance of Fine Arts Education being included in a child’s complete education curriculum. Evidence of Fine Arts Education’s effectiveness in reducing student dropout, raising student attendance, developing better team players, fostering a love for learning, improving greater student dignity, enhancing student creativity, and producing a more prepared citizen for the workplace for tomorrow can be found documented in studies held in many varied settings, from school campuses, to corporate America. Because of these documented overwhelming positive effects, Urban Music and Performing Arts Foundation Inc. believes it is imperative that every student is provided the opportunity to explore Fine Arts Education.
Our Mission
The mission of Urban Music And Performing Arts Foundation Inc. (UMPAF), a nonprofit corporation under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, is to cultivate, nurture, celebrate and showcase the creative talents of students, families and community members; to promote, advocate for and facilitate Fine Arts education in Gaston and surrounding counties; to feature local talent in concerts, poetry and literary readings, theater productions and talent showcases.
